The Heritage Line: Linking History, Rail, and Climate Solutions, is an augmented reality (AR) trail that brings to life six historic railway stops. Each stop features a short green screen video, hand-drawn animations of native plants or animals, and interactive text designed to deepen understanding of biodiversity and sustainability.
The project is led by Castleconnell Tidy Towns in collaboration with artist Ana Colomer
Thanks to Irish rail for funding a deeper experience, providing Creative biodiversity workshops with the local school to co create an interactive mural at the railway station. The initiative plants seeds of environmental stewardship by linking community stories, nature, and future-facing climate solutions.
The project integrates public art, digital storytelling, and community engagement.
Síolta Glasa is proudly supported by the Creative Climate Action Fund (Creative Ireland), National Biodiversity Action Plan Fund, Limerick City and County Council, Irish Rail, Castleconnell Tidy Towns, and Creative Ireland, along with key community and education partners.
Castleconnell
Castleconnell is a small, beautiful village on the banks of the Shannon, population of around 2.500. It is a heritage village
bordering the River Shannon in East Limerick. It takes its name from the Irish name for the castle built by the Gunning clan in 1000AD — Caislean Ui gConaing or Gunnings Castle.
The history of the area goes back to the Mesolithic age with the earliest cremated burials in Europe being discovered by the River Shannon. Centuries later, the location became a popular spa resort for visiting gentry where they built imposing mansions with large, wooded estates with views over the majestic river.
Castleconnell’s combination of natural beauty, historical charm, and opportunities to embrace nature and the outdoors makes it an ideal visitor destination. The Heritage Line augmented reality (AR) trail brings to life six historic stops around the village. The trail starts at the railway station and guides the visitor to the historic information points where they will discover history, biodiversity and nature.
Castleconnell is easily accessible by car, located just off the M7 motorway, approximately 15 minutes from Limerick City. You can also reach Castleconnell conveniently by train, with its own station on the Limerick to Ballybrophy line. The station itself is a piece of history, dating back to the mid-19th century and offering a glimpse into the village’s rich past. If you’re traveling by public transportation, regular bus services also connect Castleconnell with Limerick and other nearby towns.

Castleconnell Tidy Towns:
The aims of the Committee are to work to help to make Castleconnell an increasingly pleasant place to live, work or visit. We encourage residents to take an active part in keeping their areas clean and tidy by working with residents committees and by actively involving residents when working in their areas.
Since Castleconnell’s re-entry in the National Tidy Towns Competition in 2008, the results have been improving year on year. In 2008 we received 201 points and in the 2018 competition we received 10 points to bring our total to 320 points. This increase was sufficient to earn Castleconnell its first national award – a Bronze medal.
Current committee members are:
John Hardiman, Linda Hardiman, Pauline Bradshaw, France Clifford, Terry Poole, Margaret Freeney, Eileen McCabe, Mags Byrnes and Anne Hayes

Síolta Glasa
Síolta Glasa is a Citizen Innovation Lab collaboration between Limerick City and County Council, University of Limerick, Mary Immaculate College, Ballyhoura Development, Fab Lab Limerick and mentors Javier Buron Garcia and Dr. Veronica Santorum. The project will support community-creative partnerships to build capacity around decarbonization in Limerick city and county.
This project builds on the successful implementation of the Creative Climate Action collaborative project Decarbonizing Together delivered in Limerick in 2022 by lead partner Limerick City and County Council (LCCC).
Síolta Glasa brings together community groups from across Limerick city and county, with creative partners, to work creatively and collaboratively to examine decarbonization in their communities, identify an aspect that matters to them and
explore and enable localized behavior change. Professional creatives and scientists will be at the core of the process, contributing to a positive cycle of collaboration, which builds capacity in communities, enabling a just transition.
Síolta Glasa uses creativity to empower communities to take climate actions by making carbon reduction activities relevant, actionable and relatable to people’s lives and communities. When supported by Local Authorities and other stakeholders,
creative climate conversations/explorations increase understanding and create ‘buy in’, forming the basis for significant individual behavior change and the initiation of carbon reduction projects at community level under a variety of themes.
Síolta Glasa has the potential for long-lasting community impact in the context of the development of the Local Authority Climate Action Plans and the launch of the Community Climate Action Fund.
The collaborations will support learning and doing together, and will use, as appropriate, Limerick’s Citizen Innovation Lab as a collaboration platform to create impact through empowering communities in decarbonising Limerick by 2050, with citizen creativity placed at the core of the process. A scientific evidence-based approach to creative practice in climate projects is an important aspect of Síolta Glasa. A scientific basis for the activities carried out and behaviour changes encouraged is key. In order to develop a dialogue between the scientific and creative communities all collaborations will be supported by a Science Advisory Group convened by the Mary Immaculate College Geography Department. The Science Advisory Group will provide advice and links to scientific expertise and knowledge within their organisations that will underpin the decarbonisation journey of the collaborations based in science and ensure there is sound data and evidence to inform the projects.
The importance of sharing and amplifying the community creative stories to inspire other communities is an important aspect of Síolta Glasa. Mentored by the School of Journalism in UL, a Storytelling and Data Visualization Pillar has been incorporated into the project to create a holistic narrative of the collaborations in partnership with the community and creative industry/creative arts practitioners. This resource will collate collaboration stories and create content that can be used to amplify the project locally, nationally and internationally. They will use the Citizen Innovation Lab digital space, which will be further developed as a repository for creative community climate stories.
